Restoring Critical Communications After a DNS-Based Attack

Stay Low Ltd, a growing UK energy company, experienced a sudden outage in their external and internal communications. Email, remote access portals, and customer-facing services became unreachable. Initial vendor checks focused on firewalls and mail gateways, but the issue persisted.

Our response: Our team quickly identified a DNS-based attack that had resulted in their name servers being altered to malicious entries. We validated the correct authoritative name servers, reversed the changes, implemented hardened DNS controls, and introduced continuous monitoring around their external DNS footprint.

Outcome: Within minutes of updating to the correct name servers, communications were restored. We then worked with Stay Low Ltd to build a DNS change-control process, add alerting on configuration drift, and integrate DNS telemetry into their wider security monitoring.
